Opinion: why fighting is a bad choice for all students

You’re in the lunch room and all of the sudden there is a crowd of people circling around, yelling, and clapping for a fight to happen or to continue. Administration, teachers, and law enforcement are running to break it up and get the people involved into the office. Afterwards,12.17.15 students are sitting around the lunch table replaying the newly recorded fight and laughing about how badly someone got beat up. Students at HC love when fights happen, they will talk about the fight all day, what happened, who beat up whom, and why it happened all leading to various rumors that get spread around the school. These rumors not only affect the people involved but it also affects the other students who are scared for their safety at school.

Whenever there is yelling and a group of people start to crowd around it always scares some students. Some students don’t want to see a fight and are scared for their safety when at school.

This year, HC has had 18 events, leading to 77 suspension days. Compared to last year’s 32 events leading to 144 suspension days, that’s not a lot. But this year the events have taken place a lot closer together than last causing people to think that there has been a lot more fights than usual.

I’m a student who has seen too many fights. This year the fights have caused more people to wonder about their safety when in crowded halls or in the lunchroom. People should feel like they are safe when at school and not always worrying about whether or not they will be stuck in a situation that could bring danger near them.

It’s okay for there to be arguments between people. People want to argue for what they believe and that’s fine but it’s being handled the wrong way.

There will always be incidents at a school. With over 2,500 people it’s inevitable, but students need to stop promoting them. It isn’t funny to see an argument escalate into something physical. It isn’t funny to see someone getting pulled off another person and escorted to the office to get suspended, and it definitely isn’t funny to see someone in pain.

Getting into a fight doesn’t solve anything. People deal with their anger in different ways but for the safety of other students, they need to find ways to talk about the issue with the other person or a trusted teacher or administrator before it gets out of hand.
Students who aren’t getting in fights need to stop videotaping these incidents and crowding around the fights to cheer them on. If a student hears about a fight occurring they need to tell a teacher or administrator who can stop it from starting.
