Top Six Can’t-Miss Movies of 2015
2015 was a spectacular year for film. With major blockbusters hitting the big screen it was difficult to see all of them, but some of the best movies that came out this year were those that may have slipped under your radar. Movies such as Mockingjay: Part 2, Furious 7, The Martian, and Star Wars: The Force Awakens, may have seemed to steal the show last year, as blockbusters do, but there are many movies that came out this year that should not be missed by any film lover. In no particular order, here they are.
Ex Machina
A surprising film that came out this April, Ex Machina stars many of the same cast as those in The Force Awakens. This movie highlights the beautiful scenery of the land owned by Oscar Isaac’s character, a mysterious technological genius who has invited one of his lucky workers, Domhnall Gleeson, to his estate to spend the week so he may meet his freshly built artificial intelligence. Ex Machina is able to showcase beautiful cinematography, creative writing, and consistently build suspense, and was certainly one of the creative movies of the year. This movie is currently available for digital download and DVD.
Joy
The movie that starred the famous Jennifer Lawrence and nearly the same cast as Silver Linings Playbook made an interesting showcase with its true story. The relationships between the main characters of this film successfully show the life of the striving business woman (that is Joy) and her family, who wishes to cheat her out of her money. In Joy, the audience will certainly fall in love with Jennifer Lawrence’s performance and character, as she is the driving force in the movie.
Black Mass
The true story of “Whitey” Bulger and his gang in south Boston, Black Mass tells the story of the Irish and Italian mafia wars, and the intervention of the FBI that led to rise of Bulger’s own gang. Johnny Depp’s performance was certainly one of the most terrifying anti-hero’s of the year. And while the casting of Joel Edgerton as the FBI agent protecting Bulger perfectly keeps the audience in suspense as to what will happen to each of the characters. This movie is currently available for digital download and DVD.
It Follows
One of the few horror movies of the year, It Follows was hailed for its success and ingenious filming. With a reminiscent feeling of The Blair Witch style of horror films, this movie tells the teenage friend group of Jay, who had escaped a seemingly harmless sexual encounter. Never revealing “the monster,” this movie truly knows how to build suspense while keeping a fresh feeling to the horror franchise. This movie is currently available for digital download and DVD.
Amy
A documentary that details the life and style of Amy Winehouse, this film shows unseen music and videos from the deceased music star. A heart wrenching documentary about the terrifying reality of drug addiction, the film doesn’t fear to show the thoughts and life of this music star that touched so many lives.
Steve Jobs
Not to be confused with the 2013 film starring Ashton Kutcher, this film remade the story of the controversial Steve Jobs, this time with Michael Fassbender as the technological tycoon. The movie shows the failing premier of Apple’s voice demo, then transcends into the story of his motivations for being the cynical and often harsh business man he is known to be. However this time it also adds major focus on the relationship between Jobs and his daughter Lisa. The movie that had the excellent casting of Fassbender as Jobs successfully attributes an emotional intensity and disdain that may not have been felt in the Ashton Kutcher version, and is worth the see.
