Walsh discusses 2016’s upcoming cinema hits

Last year’s movie lineup was incredible, featuring amazing titles such as The Martian, The Hateful Eight, and Star Wars Episode VII, 2015 has been a year to remember, and one that is hard to beat. However, 2016 seems to have answered this challenge, as we prepare for an even bigger movie year.

Rogue One: a Star Wars Story– I will admit, I am a huge Star Wars fan, and that bumps this movie up, but following the record setting release of Star Wars Episode VII, this movie has huge potential and expectations to match, furthermore, the fact that this movie is produced by people different than those who produced the previous seven, so it will likely give a refreshed look at the Star Wars franchise. The movie will be set between the events of Episode III and Episode IV and will chronicle a group of rebels on their journey to steal plans to the Imperial super weapon, the Death Star. This seems to be a rather compelling plot, and, if the most recent movie in the series is any indication, will be the first of a wonderful series of spinoffs! You can see this film in theaters Dec. 16th.

Hail, Caesar! – Set in the 1950s, this musical dramatic comedy follows a day in the life of a film producer in the 1950s who has to fix the studio’s problems. In the capable hands of the Coen Brothers, this movie has great potential, which is bolstered by its grade-A cast, including the likes of Channing Tatum, Scarlett Johansson, and George Clooney. This movie has been out since February 5th.

Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them- Now, I’m not exactly a Harry Potter fan, but I have read the books and seen the movies. With only this amateur experience, I can tell you that I’m not going to see the movie. It feels like  Rowling is trying to syphon even more money out of the Harry Potter franchise. The previews released by Warner Brothers expose the movie as nothing but a cheap cash grab for the company, and certainly seems to be taking a negative departure from the original series. It seems to be a bland appeasement to the current Harry Potter fan base. If I were a die-hard fan, I would see the movie. Otherwise? I don’t think it is appealing enough to attract new audiences. If you are a real Potter fan, you can see it in theaters December 19th.

Suicide SquadThis time the villains star, giving a flipped view of the DC universe. A new cast of heroes and villains is revealed in this Arkham crime- fighting movie, including Margot Robbie, Scott Eastwood, Will Smith, Ben Affleck, and Viola Davis. This new movie is already making waves on social media, and has amassed a large following already, as it stars some of the most popular characters in the DC universe, and has a different style than any of the previous movies. This new DC experience can be had on Aug. 26th.

Doctor StrangeA new franchise for the Marvel movies, Doctor Strange offers something more for people who aren’t necessarily the Avengers type. The movie follows Doctor Strange, a brilliant surgeon who is tasked with defending the world from evil. The cast of this new franchise is amazing with the likes of Benedict Cumberbatch, Rachel McAdams, and Tilda Swinton. You can witness the beginning of this new franchise on Nov. 4th.

Captain America: Civil WarThis new installment of the Avengers series looks to be a great addition to the already impressive series, as it continues to add new spins to the plot. Unlike many superhero movies, it seems to have an interesting plot, as it pits the avengers against each other. The new movie will have all of the same cast, with a few additions. The movie releases May 6th
