HC football team looks to move past critical injury
In the beginning of the HC football game on August 12th against Louisville Fairdale, Ray Karl Irving was hit from behind and piled onto. This broke his tibia and fibula, a season ending injury and a big loss for the HC football team’s defense.
Even though the game ended in a win, the HC football team took a big loss of their starting defensive end. Irving was carted off the field and taken to the hospital where he underwent surgery the next day.
“The coaches and my teammates visited me the first day in the hospital to cheer me up,” Irving said. Irving is still currently not in school and is still homebound.
Irving is a junior at HC starting defensive end for the varsity football team and also wrestles. This injury prevents him from returning to the football team this year. However, he plans to return to the wrestling team around the middle of the season.
The HC football team will have to overcome the loss of their starting defensive end, being replaced by Jordan Gross, also a junior at HC.
“Ray Karl is a big loss on defense, but when you have a guy like Jordan Gross backing him up its like there is nothing missing,” Will Preston said, who also starts on the HC defense.
“The game plan will still not change even after the loss of our best defensive player,” Demetrius Gay said, the 15 year coach at HC.
The HC defense will have to keep moving forward and fill in the gaps to recover from this loss.
Through hard work, determination, and the support of teammates and the community Ray Karl Irving hopes to overcome the obstacles his injury presents in both the mental and physical aspects and compete in these sports next season.
