HC library promotes creativity with edible books contest
Creativity is often overshadowed in a school setting due to the focus on academics. In order to foster creativity, the Lexington Public Library and HC are collaborating by creating a competition that combines artistic abilities and literature.
“We really want to capitalize on the opportunity to work with the public library,” HC Librarian Amanda Hurley said, “and support each other in our journey to promoting books.”
The only guidelines are the creation needs to be 50% edible, should be no larger than 18”x24”x24”, and a written explanation must be attached. On Oct. 18 volunteer PTSA members will choose their favorite and most creative “edible book” and send it off to compete in a district wide competition. This will give participants the chance to represent HC in a district setting and compete in something that they are passionate about.
“Students will be interested in it because it gives them the chance to be recognized and represent the school at the Public Library.” HC Librarian Felica White said.
The edible books contest will encourage reading by implementing an event that students can receive acknowledgment for their talents. It will also introduce a new way of expressing interest in literature.
“It will be different from anything we have done before,” Hurley said. “It gives students the opportunity to show their creative abilities while also reading.”
This contest provides a way for the student body to interact with their peers over something that they enjoy. It will also give them the chance to voice their perspectives on books.
“I have always had a passion for reading and thought of it as a way to escape to another world,” HC Junior Elijah Bates said. “I think that the contest will provide an incentive to read more and really get lost in the pages of a book.”
The hope for the competition is to bring students together and reinforce enjoyable activities and incorporate reading into daily lives.
“I really hope students participate because it’s really out of the box,” Hurley said, “It will be really fun.”
