Wrapping up the Aug. 29 SBDM Meeting
This month’s Site Based Council meeting began with a report acknowledging HC’s History Club winning the James Stewart Award and HC teacher Steven Riley being presented the Earle C. Clements Award for his prestige in educating students in history and civics.
Discussion of school-sanctioned teams and clubs were also a point of interest. HC Lacrosse and Speech and Debate were both approved for expenses for the 2017-2018 school year.
A majority of the meeting focused on the overstaffing of all Fayette County high schools, excluding that of Fredrick Douglass. As of now, HC is overstaffed by four members of faculty. Proposals were brought to the table, but no decisions were made official. All options will affect students for the following year, but HC and the county are working to ensure that students’ education is the first priority. These proposals are mostly focused on reductions in current electives and career pathways.
HC Student Representative Reagan Smith gave the student report regarding the success of the freshman orientation. Praise was given to all student volunteers and the freshman class attendees.
The Aug. meeting was concluded with a closed session for members of the council. The next meeting will be held on Sept. 13th at 5:30 at HC’s Media Center.
