New Theater Production class expands possibilities for productions at HC

Theater Production is one of the new additions for the 2017-2018 classes here at HC. This class is intended to help Blue Devils with theater, and hopefully various elementary schools across Fayette County.

HC Art teacher, Kiefer Shuler came up with the idea of creating this class. His intentions were not only to receive help with future plays, but to also introduce students to the process of creating a play from a backstage point of view

“So far, this year has been a success,” Shuler said, “and it seems like the students enjoy it.”

So it would seem, as the class was an immediate hit with 42 students joining at the beginning of the semester.

“I wanted to make the class because HC didn’t have an established drama program,” Keifer Shuler said.

The only drama options at HC were previously offered outside of school. Thus, this class is the first of its kind, and has created a big following.

“I really like Theater Production because of the atmosphere,” HC Senior Skylar Scott said. “It’s laid back and hands-on.”

This class is described as an interactive class, where students can witness the theatre first hand through set design and construction.

“They’re going to learn how to work with power tools, equipment, repairs, costuming, sewing, light, soundboard, and some blueprints and drawing,” Shuler said.

Creating a play from the ground up is a new experience for most students.

“I plan to keep teaching this class,” Shuler said. “I would like to have more than one hour in the future.”

The hands-on experience interested many students and the class is now completely full, but Shuler encourages students to join next year.
