Henry Clay Boys Soccer defeats Boyd County
On Saturday, Oct 27, the Henry Clay Boys Soccer team shut out Boyd County 5-0. This win advances the Blue Devils to the third round of the playoffs versus Saint Xavier Thursday. The game will take place at Frederick Douglass.
This was the Blue Devils 11th shutout of the season. The team has greatly improved from the beginning of the season to achieve such a feat. The Devil’s allowed the same amount of goals in their their past 13 games than in their first five.
“We had to refocus,” HC Soccer Coach Jason Behler said. “Our first five games of the season we let in 13 goals, and we have let in about 13 or 14 since then.”
The Blue Devils also managed to overcome early season injuries and goalie changes, resulting in changing the rotation multiple times.
“We’ve gone through a couple different goalkeepers and tried some different people out,” Behler said. “The goalkeepers have all done well… and our back line has figured it out.”
Towards the end of the season the team improved their midfield game especially in their game against Southwestern.
“We have won the battle in midfield,” Behler said, “If you can win that you can give yourself a chance to win the game”
In order to beat Boyd County the team had to do lots of preparation. They had to go the extra mile during practice to better prepare.
“We are staying after school,” HC Senior Soccer player Antoine Yongbang said, “To work on some things we need to improve on”
The Blue Devils need a rowdy but respectful visitors section to help cheer on the team. Hopefully many fans to come out to Frederick Douglass this Thursday to support the Devils in their match against Saint Xavier.
