HC Boys Volleyball prepares for its sophomore season

On Wednesday Sep. 11, HC hosted their first boy’s volleyball game of the season. Despite being an unofficial game, large numbers of HC boys signed up to play. There were four teams organized by grade.

“The seniors will be pretty good, ” HC Volleyball Coach Dale Grupe predicted before Wednesday night’s game. “Some of them played last year, so I think the senior and junior teams will probably be the ones ending up winning tonight.”

As predicted, both the senior and junior teams clearly dominated Wednesday night’s games, beating both the freshman and sophomore teams. 

“Volleyball is the most fun sport,” Freshman Volleyball game Participant Christopher Cox said. “Everyone should be able to play a sport they’re interested in, so it’s important to me that Henry Clay has a boy’s volleyball team.”

Players on all teams were extremely excited to partake in Wednesday’s game, due to HC’s lack of a full season boy’s volleyball team.

“I know many high school boys who would play volleyball,” HC girl’s Freshman volleyball player Abby Cahill said. “I think a boy’s team will give people opportunities and will broaden HC’s sports.”

Not only are many HC boys in support of a boy’s volleyball season, however, many of the HC girl’s volleyball players are in support of a boy’s season as well.

“Well I can’t speak for all sports, but volleyball is definitely a sport that should have both a boy’s and girl’s team,” Grupe said. “There’s a lot of scholarships and they’re becoming more and more available for boys.”

As boy’s volleyball grows in popularity, the chances of FCPS having an official boy’s volleyball season increases.

“HC ‘s trying to talk to some of the other city’s schools,” Grupe said. “I think we will get three or four teams, so we will have more of an actual season this year in the spring.” 

 Boys interested in playing volleyball at HC can expect more opportunities to practice at open gyms in winter and players can expect a tryout date for the HC boy’s volleyball team during the early spring months of 2020.
