Top moments for HC this decade
HC Soccer 2010 and 2019 state championships
HC soccer has been incredibly successful this past decade. Chiefly among them is their two state championships at the beginning and end of the decade. Both times they’ve won a championship, it’s been against Daviess County with a final score of 2-0. Both teachers who’ve been the head coaches are still HC teachers. Jason Behler won in 2019 as head coach and Tim Bernardi won in 2010 with Behler as an assistant.
Boys Lacrosse 2013, 2015, 2016, 2017, 2019 state championships
Boys Lacrosse has utterly dominated the competition. Their five championships in seven years are unprecedented, despite facing both private and public teams with well coached and funded teams. Lexington Catholic, chief among them, and the 2018 Lacrosse Champions has unsurprisingly been the toughest foe for HC. However, HC successfully closed out the decade with an avenged loss in the 2018 championship game by crushing the incumbent Lexington Catholic 14-6.
Boys 2015 and 2016 Track and Field state championships
The Track & Field team won with a diverse team back to back. They were led by runners Asiah Smith, a record holder in the 100, 200, 400 meter sprints, and Dequan Robinson, another previous record holder in the 100 and 200 meter sprints.
Creation of the wall of fame
In 2015, the wall of fame was created in the connector towards the football field. This wall not only commerates the historic sports moments and athletes, but famous Henry Clay graduates who have positively affected the school.
National Merit School
After numerous students scored high on their PSAT test, Henry Clay is a National Merit School. Students who got it would receive financial aid and recognition from colleges. This allows them to have a wider range of options out of the state.
High School Rankings
In 2015, US News ranked HC as the #6 best magnet high school in Kentucky. HC was also #98 nationally among fellow magnet schools. These rankings were calculated through test score reports, GPA, graduation rates, AP exams and other comparisons with fellow state schools.
AP Capstone
In the 2016-2017, Henry Clay officially became an AP Capstone school. This meant HC offered AP Seminar and AP Research. These classes aren’t traditional in style because they focus on students evaluating themselves and their peers.They then put out a final project with months of work behind it. HC Athletes
Henry Clay has had its fair share of students becoming college athletes. A few have even taken their talents pro. One such person is Walker Buehler. A graduate of HC in 2012, he has gone on to pitch in the 2018 World Series for the Los Angeles Dodgers. He also was a member of the 2014 Vanderbilt team that won the college world series.
