Walsh summarizes local opportunities for the under-18 set

The city of Lexington can often seem like a wasteland of bars, pubs, breweries, wineries, and other attractions for those over the age of twenty one. This can be quite a problem for people under that age. Many don’t realize that there is a multitude places all over the city that minors can visit and enjoy themselves. Here are the top five options for young people here in Lexington.

1. CD Central:

CD central is the classic corner record store on steroids, complete with album posters on the wall, loud obscure music that you know you have heard before, and of course a big, lazy dog in the corner. This shop has everything from the latest rap album that you have been coveting to that obscure 20’s jazz album. They also have posters, t-shirts, and other collectibles. They even have live music, hosting a myriad of local acts, and even hosted The Black Keys a few years ago. Overall, it is a wonderful place to hang out, and is a must-see for any music lover.

A book store isn’t exactly what most people think of as a good time, but this bookstore is different. Voted Lexington’s best used and rare bookstore, Black Swan has been host to many famous and critically acclaimed authors throughout its thirty one years of business. Even if you aren’t going to meet your favorite author, Black Swan has an impressive selection of obscure and not- so obscure books in an atmosphere that makes you want to curl up with one of the interesting books on the wall and read for hours.

Pop’s is the quintessential thrift shop. With a wide selection of everything from gas masks to clothes to new and used records, Pop’s really has it all.  Pop’s is kind of a Hipster’s goodwill on steroids, complete with the musty atmosphere, the big grandpa coats, old reel-to-reel tape players, and a wealth of ironic hats. If you want to take a trip back in time to when your parents and grandparents were your age, Pop’s is the place. They have the records that your mother lusted after, the record player that your grandpa dreamed of, and the faux tiger fur coat that your father thought was disgusting. Pop’s truly is a one-stop-shop for all of your dusty and musty needs.

4. Tolly-Ho Restaurant:

Tolly-Ho is a UK and Lexington tradition. This twenty-four hour breakfast and burger joint is a great 2 AM late night snack hot spot, or an equally great 2 pm Breakfast house. Tolly-Ho has become a major UK tradition for the past forty years, as is evidenced by the fraternity and sorority paddles on the wall above the counter. Just ask any of your elders about their experiences at the Ho, and you will be bombarded with recollections of past escapades.
