Fayette County and the Lexington Public Library are working together to give students greater access to literature. Fayette County Students will soon receive a “student success card”, which will give them access to the public library’s books and resources. The cards have already been given out to students at Arlington Elementary and will soon be given out to all other Fayette County Schools in the spring of 2016.

The student success card is no different from a normal library card, and will grant students access to a wide variety of helpful resources.

The public library here in Lexington has a large digital collection of books, magazines, and music that will be available to students. The virtual librarian of Lexington Public Library, Bobby Webb, commented on how this is especially helpful for some students.

“The good thing about this is that students who can’t access our physical location can still access our collection online if they have an internet connection at school or at home,” Webb said.

Other educational resources are also available with the card, such as foreign language education apps, test preparation resources, a homework assistance program, and several other school-related resources.

The homework help program has retired teachers that can assist students with difficult assignments in classes like math and science. These teachers can also read over essays and offer you feedback. Amanda Hurley, one of the HC Librarians, praised the homework help system.

“I think it’s an untapped resource that would be amazing for people,” Hurley said.

The public libraries’ database will be helpful to students who are looking for a place to research for papers. The library also has non-educational resources, such as tools you can use to discover your genealogical history.

All FCPS students should be on the lookout for this new and exciting educational opportunity.
