HC Lacrosse wins KLA State championship
Lacrosse is a vastly growing sport in the state of Kentucky—in which HC is becoming a local powerhouse. The team has won their second consecutive KLA (Kentucky Lacrosse Association) state championship with a 7-6 win in overtime against Lexington Catholic on Sat May 14th.
This was also HC’s third state championship trophy in the past four years. This season, the team finished with an impressive record of 15-5.
The championship was neck and neck for the whole game until the very end. The game was tied for most of the final quarter until Lexington Catholic gained a 6-5 lead with nearly 20 seconds left. After a faceoff, HC quickly gained possession and right before the final buzzer sounded; Senior Sloan Warner scored a goal to tie the game at 6-6 and to force overtime.
“I am still in awe about the whole experience,” sophomore Caden Reynolds said. “It was a fun way to end an amazing season.”
The whole team was in disbelief as they thought the goal wasn’t going to be allowed due to the buzzer going off, but the referees permitted it because it was shot just barely before the buzzer. Then, nearly a minute into overtime sophomore Ben Schaeffer scored a solo go-ahead goal to give HC the win in a thrilling match.
“I feel proud to represent the school by winning State,” sophomore goalie Connor Haney said. “Not many people know about the sport, but we train hard all year and it’s an incredible feeling to see all our hard work pay off for the second year in a row.”
Along with this tremendous accomplishment, three of our fellow Blue Devils were named All State in Lacrosse: Seniors Walt Finch, Michael Fredlock and also sophomore Ben Schaeffer. Other nominees included Hudson Bradley, Riley Cunningham, Sloan Warner, Parker Gann and Mason Saunders.
The KLA is continuously attempting to raise awareness for the sport to be officially governed by the KHSAA, which is supposed to occur in Louisville in 2017.
