HC football advances in 6A tournament play
After a tough start to the season, HC football has won two of its last three games and ended the regular season with a record of 5-5. The Blue Devils competed in the first round of the 6A state playoffs and defeated Madison Central on Friday Nov. 3 with a score of 20-7.
Now with a record of 6-5, the Blue Devils will face a tough Scott County opponent on Friday Nov. 10 in the region semifinals. They will compete in a do-or-die matchup for a chance to advance in the State tournament against the Cardinals, who hold a 9-2 record.
Following a strong season the team came up just short of a city championship title after falling to Frederick Douglass 14-7, but revived their winning style on senior night with a win over Cooper 35-7 in a high scoring match.
After the win, the team gained momentum and looked forward to approach the playoffs with intensity.
“We are a very close team,” HC Senior defensive tackle John Felty said. “We work very well with one another, and we help each other to get things done on the field as a team.”
The Blue Devils hold vast senior leadership and experience, and will look to continue their form of high scoring offense. The team has the championship in the back of their mind, as the Seniors fight for their last time playing in a high school tournament.
“We take each week [and game] at a time,” Felty said. “Now we have to focus on winning in order to survive and advance.”
The team fell to Scott County in the regular season, and they hope to recover and continue, to play at their best. They realize the importance of the game as Felty, along with others, has played on this team for four years.
“We have worked hard all season to prepare for the postseason,” HC senior defensive tackle John Felty said. “We expect to fight hard every time we step on the field.”
