Wrapping up the Jan. 11 SBDM meeting

By Lauren Pennington and Kennedy Foreman

The Site Based Decision Making Council meets every month to discuss the daily management of HC. In the pass few months the council has discussed and approved countless programs: new electives, an alternative program, and introduced a student representative onto the board. This month, the council discussed the budget, the idea of eliminating class rank for the class of 2021 and more. Meetings are usually held on the second Wednesday of every month, starting at 5:30.

At the beginning of the meeting on Jan. 11th, the council recognized HC Spanish teacher Paul Brown for being honored by the FLACCA organization for his involvement in volunteer work for their yearly festival. Technology Resource teacher Tim Bernardi gave an overview of the new technology that HC will be asking for 2017. There was an acknowledgment of the latest HC SBDM member and first student representative, Zachariah Sippy.

The main focus of this SBDM meeting was to address the questions that arose from the prospect of removing class rank.  HC counselor Rachael Howard introduced this topic at the previous adjourning. During this meeting, class rank had its first reading, although parental concern called for further research on the subject before it became a policy.  Questions about the impact on students applying to military academies were brought to the table. With these concerns, the council plans on furthering their research for the second reading, scheduled for Feb. 8th.
