ESL program remains optimistic after prospects of immigration ban

The focus of a majority of President Trump’s campaign was centered on policies that would restrict immigration into the country. President Trump has followed through with this notion, implementing a ban on seven, predominantly Muslim, countries in late January. Although a federal judge has overruled the executive order, some still feel there may be later repercussions that will need to be addressed.

The HC English as a Second Language program (ESL) works with students from around the world, with differing cultures and languages, to further their education in the US. With current prospects of limiting immigration into the United States and deporting by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), many students feel concerned.

“Students are scared,” HC ESL teacher Marina Lyon said, “but I’m encouraging my students to work hard and to try their best.”

The ESL program is working to ensure comfort within the student body, especially those that are immigrants themselves, despite the current atmosphere in the USA. The program is attempting to establish a sense of security and trust at HC.

“We have built trust already,” Lyon said, “[ESL students] love school, they love teachers, so we are like a family here. We are working to encourage each other.”

Despite the negative rhetoric circulating, students are remaining optimistic. A majority are seeking comfort in the positivity surrounding HC, feeling welcomed and secure. One of the ways this notion is established is by the ESL reading program, where ESL students and native speakers alike come together to strengthen their English skills.

“I feel safe [at HC],” HC ESL student Kashindi Yongola said. “All my teachers make sure that I feel comfortable.”

HC has also made sure that these students receive all of the necessities in order to succeed. ESL student’s education and well-being are a top priority.

“The ESL program provides me with more opportunities to learn,” HC ESL student Mustafa Aohajjaj said. “I feel secure, like I can do anything”

Even with the negativity that is circulating in the world, HC continues to maintain a positive environment. Efforts made by the faculty, specifically the ESL teachers and members of the program, ensures the safety and a sense of belonging to all students.
