Wrapping up the Nov. 1 2017 SBDM meeting

The Nov Site Based Council meeting began with a good news report, commemorating HC students, faculty and teams. HC Librarian Amanda Hurley was elected the President of the KY Association of School Librarians and HC Math teacher Ronni Tallent received the 2017 Ann S. Booth MESA Award from the Kentucky Council of Teachers of Mathematics. The HC band placed third at the Tates Creek Invitational and sixth with a distinguished rating at the State Competition. The HC Cheerleading team placed second at the Regional Cheer Competition, HC Varsity Academic Team won against Lexington Christian Academy and Irish Jenkins was the recipient of the National Speech and Debate Association’s Academic All American Award.

Sandra Palmer and Coleen Wolfe held a public comment concerning summer school assignments and homework. The two expressed their distaste for the amount of work that students are given over the summer, before the course even begins. Prospects of a new policy concerning the matter will be discussed at the next SBDM meeting.

New course approvals were addressed, but there is only one definite new course for the following school year, an AP Research class.

The Safety and Wellness Policy went through a first reading and was presented by HC Health teacher Lisa Hager.

The meeting was concluded with fundraiser and field trip approvals and the student report was delivered by HC Student Representative Reagan Smith. Issues such as parking and student skipping were points of interest. The next SBDM meeting will be held at 5:30 in the HC library on Dec 13.
