Lexington Día De Los Muertos Festival celebrates Latino culture

On Nov. 1 downtown Lexington hosted the Day of the Dead Festival also known as the “Día de los Muertos” festival at the Living Arts and Science Center. The festival consisted of many traditional Mexican dances and a candlelight walk to the cemetery. Families were able to decorate sugar skulls and look at the different altars (tumbas) made by the community.

The festival originated in Latin America, and has made it way to Lexington. The festival is traditionally to respect a family’s deceased relatives by cleaning tombstones and praying over the graves. These customs have transformed into modern times, using the time to still respect the dead, but with face paint and large dancing numbers.

This festival allowed many to understand the diverse culture of Latin America, bringing together Lexingtonians of all backgrounds together to celebrate the holiday.
